Newspapers and Screen Resolution

Interesting continued movement on this topic - noted by both Jay Small’s blog, and Editor + Publisher (to which Small also links). The weird thing about all of these notes is that none of them seem aware of the WSJ story we cited in our March 16 post, or the conclusions that European media companies are drawing regarding the advantages of making the switch to tabloid. If, as the WSJ suggested, younger people simply don’t find broadsheets “usable” any longer, then Knight Ridder knows what it’s doing - regardless of the seemingly authoritative comments by the media analyst in the E+P article. We’ll have to see if KR experiences the same gains that the Euro papers have been. At any rate, continuing evidence that “resolution” (in some senses a ‘format’ issue) is directly pertinent to usability concerns. Not just aesthetics.
