The Long Tail

Nick has a point when he says he’s getting tired of seeing blogs fulminating about “the long tail.” I knew what he meant - although I have used it before in CoFactors and it’s getting marquee treatment here. I also distantly recalled reading a long article in some place like Wired about the phrase and its implications for 21st century web business culture. But it took Nick’s irritation-spurred curiosity for him to turn up a surprisingly excellent Wikipedia post on the phrase. And one that’s definitely worth posting, especially because the long tail is not just dependent on inventory and distribution costs for its effectiveness as a business model. It also requires a system and an interface that are usable enough for the average consumer to navigate through a massive collection of non-popular items…
